Seeing Biblical Truth Reflected in the American Constitution, in the Human Heart, and Throughout History
Introduction: Truth Remains Unchanged in an Age of Darkness
In an age when Islamism, communism, and various evil ideologies spread across America and the world—when some seek to plant Sharia law in the United States and infiltrate politics under the guise of religion or ethnicity; when communist thought, gender confusion, and moral relativism corrode the conscience in the name of “freedom”; when truth is suppressed and light seems covered by darkness—we must first ask: What kind of nation is America? Where did her freedom come from? Upon what foundation were her laws, conscience, and rights built? Has she forgotten her founding declaration—“One Nation Under God”?
If we fail to understand who “God” truly is in this phrase, we will not understand why America exists, why she is falling, or why her freedom is vanishing.
In such times of confusion, we must return to the beginning—to the One True God who has already revealed Himself. Only He is the source of all order and liberty.
I. Revealed Truth Needs No Proof
The meaning of “Under God” has never depended on how people define “God,” nor on whether they choose to acknowledge Him—because the existence and sovereignty of the true God never depend on human will.
He has already revealed Himself and made the truth known to all humanity. Those who submit to Him walk in the light; those who rebel cannot see truth or light. God allows the stubborn and unrepentant to sink into delusion, yet His righteous judgment will surely come.
“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19–20, ESV)
This testimony is not written to prove that God exists, nor to argue whether the “God” in “Under God” refers to the Triune God—for it is far harder to deny Him than to acknowledge Him.
To deny truth takes more effort than to submit to it. His existence needs no proof; His revelation is already evident—in the human heart and in the record of history.
II. The Constitutional Foundation: Rooted in Biblical Truth
Though the Constitution does not explicitly name the Triune God, its moral and spiritual foundation clearly arises from the truths revealed by Him: the dignity and equality of all people, the meaning of freedom, the sovereignty of conscience (under God’s rule), and the binding power of law.
These foundational values could never emerge from an atheistic worldview, nor from any other religious system. Only the biblical revelation of creation and redemption explains them:
- Human dignity and equality — because all people are created in the image of God.
“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27, ESV)
- Freedom — because true freedom is not lawless self-expression, but obedience restored by truth.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, ESV)
- The freedom of conscience — because the conscience is the moral law written by God upon the heart, and it becomes righteous only when it submits to His sovereignty.
“They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness.” (Romans 2:15, ESV)
- The authority of law — because law without divine justice becomes merely a tool of power, not a standard of righteousness.
“For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; He will save us.” (Isaiah 33:22, ESV)
Thus, “Under God” is not a political phrase but a confession—an acknowledgment that humanity stands as creation before its Creator and under His sovereign rule.
III. “God” Is Not a Religious Symbol but the Source of Truth
If “God” were merely an abstract concept, a natural force, or the deity of any other religion, then the foundations of the Constitution—freedom, rights, law, and conscience—would all collapse. These foundations come only from the God who has revealed Himself in Scripture.
The God of the Bible is neither an unnamed energy nor a silent cosmic principle, and certainly not a man-made deity shaped by religious doctrines. He is the essence of holiness, the essence of righteousness, the essence of love, the essence of wisdom, the essence of goodness, and the essence of truth.
“For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold His face.” (Psalm 11:7, ESV)
“God is love.” (1 John 4:8, ESV)
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6, ESV)
He is not a human invention but the Creator who has revealed Himself. He is not a silent “law of the universe,” nor any god of human imagination, but the living God who makes covenant with humankind. Those who believe in Him are not only His people but members of His household—children of the Father, the Bride of the Son, and brothers and sisters of Christ. The Holy Spirit is their Helper—guiding, comforting, convicting, and leading them into all truth.
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever… When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” (John 14:16; 16:13, ESV)
Without this God, even the phrase “unalienable rights” loses all meaning—for apart from Him, rights are no longer sacred, and freedom is no longer eternal.
IV. The Witness of the Heart and of History
God’s revelation is not written only in Scripture but also in the human heart and in the testimony of history. America became “a nation under God” not because someone wrote His name into the Constitution, but because His light has never ceased to shine—and never will.
Even in this age of corruption, deception, and deep infiltration by evil powers, that light still shines—through the spirit of the Constitution, through the moral foundation of law, through the conscience of humankind, and even through a culture that still reflects traces of divine truth.
His light can never be extinguished. People may fail to see it or pretend not to see it. When they persist in resisting truth and refuse to repent, God gives them over to their own desires; His light withdraws from among them. Darkness deepens, conscience falters, and society falls into confusion.
“Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.” (Romans 1:24, ESV)
“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” (John 3:19, ESV)
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5, ESV)
Yet the light itself endures forever—for that light is Christ Himself, the Light of life, the only hope for both nations and hearts.
V. The Call of This Generation: Do Not Let “God” Be Blurred Again
Today’s age deliberately blurs the meaning of “God,” dulling the edge of truth and severing authority from divine sovereignty. But the meaning of “Under God” has never changed.
Evil fears the freedom of America. And America’s freedom endures not because she is strong, but because she once acknowledged this truth: All power, law, and conscience stand under the authority of the true God.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10, ESV)
When “God” becomes a vague religious idea, “One Nation” no longer stands under Him but under man. However, when hearts turn again to the true God through the work of the Holy Spirit, His light will once more shine upon this land.
VI. Conclusion: The Inescapable Truth
“For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20, ESV)
“Under God” is not a historical slogan but an eternal reality and truth —that all nations, all laws, all conscience, and all liberty exist under the Triune God, the one and only true God.
Lord, have mercy on this land You once blessed. Awaken sleeping souls, cleanse hearts polluted by lies. May America turn back, humble herself before You, acknowledge You as Lord, and let Your light shine again—on this nation, this people, this generation, and to the ends of the earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
